Rep. John Lewis Reflects on the Passing of Esteemed Educator Asa Hilliard

August 16, 2007
Press Release

“Asa Hilliard was a mentor and educator who touched the lives of thousands of students.  Through his work and his teaching many young people and those not so young learned the mastery and accomplishment of their African heritage for the first time. His exhaustive research, his guided tours to Africa, and his ability to put complex ideas into simple language, allowed him to use history as a tool to bring black people into oneness with themselves.  In this way he was more than an educator, psychologist and philosopher, he was a healer, a way-shower, a bearer of light who used knowledge to transform the minds of his students.  He was a tremendous asset to the Georgia State University system and to the Atlanta community.  He will be deeply missed.”
