Rep. John Lewis Mourns the Passing of Rep. John Dingell
“This nation has lost one of the great legislators of our time. Rep. John Dingell was a man who did not hesitate to stand up, speak up and speak out for those who were left out and left behind. He was a champion of Medicare and health care reform.
“He introduced legislation that established the Civil RIghts Division of the Department of Justice. He co-wrote the Endangered Species Act and the Mammal Protection Act, which saved animals like the gray whale, the whooping crane and the bald eagle from extinction.
“Under his leadership, the Energy and Commerce Committee became an investigative powerhouse that enforced consumer safety regulations, rooted out corruption, and demanded fair dealings from pharmaceutical companies, healthcare companies, and scientific research interests.
“John Dingell was a legislative giant, the longest serving member of Congress, whose vision and influence helped shaped the politics of the 20th century in this country. He was a fearless representative who demanded fairness on behalf of his constituents and fought for what he was convinced was in the best interests of the people. Rep. John Dingell was one of a kind. We may not be so lucky or blessed to see his likeness again. He will be deeply missed.”
